This is something that wonât be for everyone, and I do understand this; however, it is something that all of us need to live: Platelets. This little blood helpers replenish quickly in healthy people and do not make you feel weak in the process of self-replenishment.

I have a friend from work whoâs son, Dylan, needs platelets to be donated in order for him to regain his health during his treatment. I will not go into all of the details of what his treatment is and all here, because his father, Eric, that also works for FIM already did a much better job with the whole story.

Soâ¦ back to what Iâm asking of you. Iâm donating platelets tomorrow for Dylan and Iâm hoping that you can do the same sometime soon. Even if Dylanâs platelet needs get met, there are many other children with the same need. Platelets have a very short shelf-life and must be transfused within five days of collection. I wonât lie to you, donating platelets takes a bit longer than just donating blood. But you donât get to sit in the e-Chair (ultra-cool, comfy chair with easy access to: movies, games, internet browsing, and more) if you just donate blood. It takes about two hours to complete the platelet collection process, and part of this process is giving you, the donor, the rest of your blood back. This process allows you to feel much more normal shortly after your donation is complete.

If you are up to the challenge:

Be at least 17 years old (there is no upper age limit)
Weigh at least 110 lbs.
Be in general good health
Have not taken any aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications within 2 full days of donation
If diabetic: No insulin (oral medications are acceptable)
If asthmatic: No oral medications (Singulair is acceptable)
Must be willing to allow approximately 2 hours for the entire donation process.

Then please schedule an appointment today for a time that is convenient for you. To do so, please call UCLAâs Blood and Platelet Center at 310-794-7217 and ask to make a platelet donation appointment. Please mention Dylan David as the patient you are donating for. The facility is located in Westwood Village (map here) and you can read more about them here.

Even if you do not do this for me, thank you for reading my plea for help.

I have installed it on my laptop, home desktop, and even my development machine at work. I have only had one problem with it thus far, and it is with the Gmail indexing. None of my installs seem to get my Gmail. I did have Larry’s Gmail Indexer working on my machine at work until my gateway began blocking POP access . I submitted the problem to Google via their Contact Us link, but have not received a response (besides the auto one) yet. The other thing that I am adjusting to is the full browser for search results as opposed to the Deskbar’s mini-browser. Besides my gripes, it is really a slick interface that is beginning to transform the way I work on the computer. Is it just me, or is Google beginning to sound more and more like the Borg…? "

Adobe Needs Attention

Today while working I was trying to open a PDF file from my development site, and my browser locked-up on me. While I am developing, I usually have a lot of applications running and a lot of windows open, so I missed a dialog telling me to turn on automatic updates for Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.

Now I have to admit, I have been very happy with this release of Acrobat. It has proven itself to be fast and light weight when opening a PDF document, and has been flawless at opening within the browser. But this bugged me. Luckily humor saved the day when Adobe’s little update utility popped up with the following (un-edited I swear) dialog.

Ahhh… isn’t that sweet. It just needed a little attention…

Parenting Philosophy

Robin had two awesome posts (here and here) describing a little bit about our philosophy of parenting. We are not trying to make anyone that feels differently than us feel like they are wrong in how they raise their own children, but instead trying to open a dialog with anyone who raises young children.

We feel that there is a lot more to learn about what is best for young children, and it is this reason that we would love to openly discuss techniques and philosophies that other care-givers have. Above all, one primary philosophy that we truly take to heart and are striving to apply, is the Non-Violent Parenting Philosophy. We even attend parenting classes at the Center for Non-Violent Education and Parenting that support and help us to work through the difficulties of parenting while keeping it all in a gentle and connected approach. One statement that the founder, Ruth Beaglehole made in class one day (probably many other times as well) was that:

"A child, even an infant, is a full human being. Just because they cannot support themselves, does not make them any less complete as a human being."

It took me a little while to swallow the full meaning of this small statement, but once I did, it gave me a profound new perspective on how I treat not only my on children, but any that I come into contact with.

Well, I could go on and on just about what we have learned at the center and from our dialogs with Ruth, but I would rather open a discussion about all (please only those that you feel are for the childrens' best interest) your ideas.
